High Court Commercial Disputes 2022

The Solomonic year in review 2022 is now available

Solomonic, as the UK’s most comprehensive commercial litigation database, has compiled a review of the 2022 year in commercial litigation in the High Court.

Despite geopolitical turbulence, 2022 was a rather typical year for litigators. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, Brexit impacts and strikes across the United Kingdom made for an unsettled year. However, litigation activity was rather unexceptional. The disruption of Covid and the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war were expected to generate disputes, but general economic stress and sanctions on key individuals may have dampened the volume of new disputes.

More than 2,100 law firms were instructed in over 7,250 disputes last year.

Key highlights from our analysis include:

  • TMT disputes were up 25% on 2021, while Banking & finance was the most active sector

  • Professional negligence claims were down 16%

  • Winding up petitions rose by 367%, as state protections for businesses ended and the tough economic climate started to bite

  • Hamlins LLP issued the most claims

  • Clyde & Co LLP were busiest law firm overall

  • Misuse of confidential information disputes doubled, as claims against newspaper group continued to flood in
